We live in a world that is trying to grab our attention following every eye blink. Our time is an expensive commodity that we are giving away like bread crumbs, almost to the point we feel a sense of guilt for having extra free time. Hustling to the point of exhaustion has become way cooler than self preservation . Working harder and later in the day gets a more positive reaction from friends than rushing out of the office to make it to the gym. We all want success, because we believe that it is going to make us happier. What we fail to realize is that in that order, happiness becomes unattainable. Once we meet our demands of success we just redefine what it means and put our head down to work towards the next milestone. While this is an effective way to get tasks accomplished, much like the dog chasing the rabbit on the track we never actually catch up to happiness. Instead, we should aim to first be happy and use that optimism to increase our productivity and launch us faster towards success. It is no secret that we work better, more efficiently, and create stronger and longer lasting relationships when we are happy.
If happiness is the goal, exercise and diet are two of the best tools to help facilitate growth in that direction. Setting aside time for your health will cause everything else in your life to blossom. So shut off your phone, put down the tablet, stop answering emails, leave work on time, tell your friends at happy hour you’ll take a rain check, and go to the gym.
